Synopsis:

How do you grow up when your mother teaches you to fly, but the world tells you to stay still? 

Aria tells the story of a young girl constantly caught between two worlds: between childhood and adulthood, between Italy and China, between the purity of the stage and the mystery of the night. Aria is a 13-year-old Italian-Chinese girl, going through a transformative moment as an adolescent. The constant visit of her biological mother Nini, a fascinating and unconventional figure, a pole dancer in a nightclub,  interrupts the stability of Aria's new family. However, the bond between mother and daughter is bound to grow — no matter the cost.

Through the language of cinema, ARIA explores the body as a form of expression and dance as a path to identity — an intimate, luminous coming-of-age tale where innocence and desire quietly intertwine.

Come si fa a crescere quando tua madre ti insegna a volare, ma il mondo ti dice di restare fermo?            

Aria racconta il risveglio di una ragazza costantemente sospesa tra due mondi: tra l’infanzia e l’età adulta, tra l’Italia e la Cina, tra la purezza del palcoscenico e i misteri della notte. In un’estate romana, tra luci al neon e riflessi di specchi, Aria cerca di capire chi è, cosa desidera e cosa significa essere vista.

Attraverso la magia del cinema, ARIA si propone di esplorare il corpo come linguaggio e la danza come identità, in una storia intima, vibrante, dove il confine tra innocenza e desiderio diventa sempre più sottile.

Why This Film?

When we asked Wenjie Yu, director and screenwriter of the short film, how the idea for Aria came about, she smiled and said: "The film is rooted in my own memories. I grew up in a divorced family, with my mother working in a nightclub. I still remember waiting up for her late at night, sharing snacks and secrets in our tiny apartment: a moment of warmth and intimacy that shaped my view of mother-daughter relationships. These images stayed with me and became the emotional seeds of Aria.

The film explores adolescence as something fluid and nonlinear, how curiosity, desire, and self-discovery flow through body, performance, and mirroring. It’s intimate, messy, and dreamlike—grounded in realism but filtered through a very subjective, emotional lens. I also wanted to talk about the body, but not as an object of desire: as a space of contradictions, freedom, and power. And then I asked myself: when a little girl learns to dance, does she learn to move or to be looked at?

I believe Aria is both deeply personal and universal. It’s a cross-cultural story, born from my own experience but speaking to themes of family, desire, and identity that travel beyond borders."

Quando abbiamo chiesto a Wenjie Yu, regista e sceneggiatrice del cortometraggio, come è nata l'idea di Aria, lei ha sorriso e ha risposto: "Il film affonda le sue radici nei miei ricordi personali. Sono cresciuta in una famiglia divorziata, con mia madre che lavorava in un nightclub. Ricordo ancora quando la aspettavo fino a tarda notte, condividendo snack e segreti nel nostro minuscolo appartamento: un momento di calore e intimità che ha plasmato la mia visione dei rapporti madre-figlia. Queste immagini sono rimaste con me e sono diventate il seme emotivo di Aria.

Il film esplora l'adolescenza come qualcosa di fluido e non lineare, come la curiosità e la scoperta di sé fluiscono attraverso il corpo, la performance e il rispecchiamento. È intimo, disordinato e onirico, basato sul realismo ma filtrato attraverso una lente molto soggettiva ed emotiva. Volevo anche parlare del corpo, ma non come oggetto del desiderio: come spazio di contraddizioni, libertà e potere. Mi sono chiesta: quando una bambina impara a ballare, impara a muoversi o a essere guardata?

Credo che Aria sia allo stesso tempo profondamente personale e universale. È una storia interculturale, nata dalla mia esperienza personale, ma che affronta temi come la famiglia, il desiderio e l'identità che vanno oltre i confini".

Meet Our Characters:

ARIA - 13 

ITA: Curiosa, introversa, ma animata da un’irrequietudine sottile. Aria vive sospesa tra due culture e due modelli di femminilità: la compostezza borghese di Elena e la libertà di Nini. Attraverso la danza e il corpo, cerca di costruire un’identità propria, emancipandosi dallo sguardo altrui. Aria rappresenta la soglia tra l’infanzia e l’età adulta, tra la scoperta del desiderio e la paura di esserne travolta.

ENG: Curious, introverted, but animated by a subtle restlessness. Aria lives suspended between two cultures and two models of femininity: Elena's bourgeois composure and Nini's freedom. Through dance and her body, she tries to construct her own identity, emancipating herself from the gaze of others. Aria represents the threshold between childhood and adulthood, between the discovery of desire and the fear of being overwhelmed by it.

NINI- 33 

ITA: Ballerina di pole dance, giovane madre e spirito libero. Ha lasciato l'uomo che amava e la figlia che adorava per inseguire un'idea di libertà e caos. È una ragazza intrappolata nella femminilità. È sia la musa che la migliore amica di Aria, come un sogno delicato e irraggiungibile. Nini è un personaggio contraddittorio: seduttrice, cattiva, musa, eroina. È forte e fragile, provocatoria e tenera, madre e figlia allo stesso tempo.

ENG: Pole dancer, young mother, and free spirit. She left the man she loved and the daughter she adored to pursue an idea of freedom and chaos. She’s a girl trapped in womanhood. She’s both the muse and best friend of Aria, like a delicate, unreachable dream. Nini is a contradictory character: the seducer, the villain, the muse, the hero. She’s strong and fragile, provocative and tender, mother and child at the same time.

MARTA- 14 anni

ITA: Sorellastra di Aria. È curiosa, sfrontata, e vive l’adolescenza come un gioco di imitazioni e sfide. Ha lo stesso desiderio di Aria. Considera Nini una figura femminile perfetta e il simbolo della libertà. È come la versione bambina di Nini, la “cattiva influenza” che attrae Aria nel suo gioco di esplorazione e liberazione.

ENG: Aria's stepsister. She is curious, bold, and experiences adolescence as a game of imitation and challenges. She has the similar desire as Aria. She views Nini as a perfect female figure and the symbol of freedom. She’s like the child version of Nini, the “bad influence” who pulls Aria into her game of exploration and liberation.

MATTEO- 35 anni

ITA: Padre amorevole ma disorientato. Ex marito di Nini, vive un continuo senso di colpa e inadeguatezza. Rappresenta il volto maschile della cura: presente, ma incapace di comprendere fino in fondo la complessità emotiva delle donne che lo circondano.

ENG: A loving but confused father. Nini's ex-husband, he lives with a constant sense of guilt and inadequacy. He represents the male side of caregiving: present, but unable to fully understand the emotional complexity of the women around him.

ELENA- 37 anni

ITA: Rigorosa, elegante, controllata. È la nuova moglie di Matteo e cerca di mantenere l’ordine in una casa segnata da tensioni sotterranee. In Aria vede una figlia da proteggere, ma anche uno specchio delle proprie paure: la perdita del controllo, del ruolo, del potere.

ENG: Strict, elegant, controlled. She is Matteo's new wife and tries to maintain order in a home marked by underlying tensions. In Aria, she sees a daughter to protect, but also a mirror of her own fears: the loss of control, of her role, of power.

Director's Statement:

Girl's Sexuality Exploration: 

The exploration of young girls’ sexuality has long been underrepresented in cinema. In researching childhood sexuality, I learned that such behaviors are not only common but part of normal development—self-stimulation, curiosity about bodies, role play, even the beginnings of voyeurism and exhibitionism. Yet these experiences are seldom spoken about, let alone shown on screen. Meanwhile, Nini represents female sexuality exploration as an adult. As a very young mother coming from a rather conservative culture who never had the space to fully explore herself. She’s a girl trapped in womanhood. Self-discovery is not bound to age—it continues throughout life.

Mother-daughter Relationship: 

The film also examines the complexity of the mother–daughter bond. We are all, in some way, both perfect mothers and terrible ones. There is no singular definition of a “good” mother; women are multifaceted and can remain free to be whoever they choose, even after becoming a parent. While many mother–daughter stories dwell on generational trauma, Aria focuses on admiration, intimacy, and the possibility of friendship between them.

Relazione madre-figlia:  Il film esamina anche la complessità del legame madre-figlia. In un certo senso, siamo tutte madri perfette e madri terribili allo stesso tempo. Non esiste una definizione univoca di “buona” madre; le donne sono sfaccettate e possono rimanere libere di essere chiunque scelgano di essere, anche dopo essere diventate madri. Mentre molte storie madre-figlia si soffermano sul trauma generazionale, Aria si concentra sull'ammirazione, l'intimità e la possibilità di amicizia tra loro.

Immigration and Cross-cultural Family: Set within the reality of a reconstructed Chinese–Italian family, the story also engages with the tensions between different sexual, cultural, and personal values. Immigration, identity, and family life converge in a space where love, rebellion, and self-definition are constantly renegotiated.

Immigrazione e famiglia interculturale: Ambientata nella realtà di una famiglia italo-cinese ricostituita, la storia affronta anche le tensioni tra diversi valori culturali e personali. Immigrazione, identità e vita familiare convergono in uno spazio in cui amore, ribellione e definizione di sé sono costantemente rinegoziati.

Pole Dance Aesthetic: Self-exploration through pole dance

Pole dance is an art about intimacy, sensation,  freedom and connection. In most films, pole dance lingers in the background: a profession, a spectacle, an aesthetic choice. Rarely is it the heartbeat of the story, the emotional spark of a character, or embraced as an art form. With Aria, we want to bring pole dance to the center — raw, intimate, and transformative. Flying and falling, pulling and pushing…It’s a metaphor — of exploration, seduction and liberation, and most importantly, of human bonds and connections. 

Esplorazione di sé attraverso la pole dance: La pole dance è un'arte che riguarda l'intimità, le sensazioni, la libertà e la connessione. Nella maggior parte dei film, la pole dance rimane sullo sfondo: una professione, uno spettacolo, una scelta estetica. Raramente è il cuore pulsante della storia, la scintilla emotiva di un personaggio o viene abbracciata come forma d'arte. Con Aria, vogliamo portare la pole dance al centro: cruda, intima e trasformativa. Volare e cadere, tirare e spingere... È una metafora dell'esplorazione, della liberazione e, soprattutto, dei legami e delle connessioni umane.

Meet Our Director:

As a filmmaker from China now based in Europe, Wenjie Yu lived and worked across countries in Asia, Europe, and the United States. With a background in journalism and documentary, her storytelling is grounded in slice-of-life realism, yet shaped by my female and diasporic perspective. She's drawn to poetic, intimate, and sensual emotional landscapes, often exploring themes of womanhood, gender dynamics, and the experiences of Asian artists navigating Western culture.

Her approach to filmmaking is fluid and hybrid, blending genres and forms to blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. She merge documentary and fiction, the everyday and the fantastical, always seeking the cinematic language that best serves the emotional truth of the story.

Her works have been shortlisted at the FBS Screenplay Festival in China and Macau International Movie Festival. She has directed documentaries that broadcast on CCTV-9 and Tencent Video in China.

Come regista cinese che ora vive in Europa, Wenjie Yu ha vissuto e lavorato in diversi paesi dell'Asia, dell'Europa e degli Stati Uniti. Con un background nel giornalismo e nel documentario, la sua narrazione si basa sul realismo della vita quotidiana, ma è influenzata dalla mia prospettiva femminile e diasporica. Sono attratta da paesaggi emotivi poetici, intimi e sensuali, e spesso esploro temi come la femminilità, le dinamiche di genere e le esperienze degli artisti asiatici che si muovono nella cultura occidentale.

Il suo approccio alla realizzazione di film è fluido e ibrido, mescolando generi e forme per sfumare i confini tra realtà e immaginazione. Unisce documentario e finzione, quotidiano e fantastico, cercando sempre il linguaggio cinematografico che meglio si adatta alla verità emotiva della storia.

I suoi lavori sono stati selezionati al FBS Screenplay Festival in Cina e al Macau International Movie Festival. Ha diretto documentari trasmessi su CCTV-9 e Tencent Video in Cina.

We have already completed the development and pre-production phases, but in order to make the film to the highest artistic standard, we need your support.
