Voices from Gilan: support for Ramin and his master thesis on Iranian dialectology in Rome

I have taught Iranian Philology at La Sapienza University since 2008. My recent work includes an overall sketch of the history of the Persian language from antiquity to the present written with Paola Orsatti for The Oxford Handbook of Persian Linguistics (New York, 2018). In my years at La Sapienza, I have had the good fortune and the privilege of teaching several Iranian students, who stimulate and enrich my own research and understanding of Iranian philology. Ramin is one of them, enthusiastic, eager to learn and passionate about research.

Having already proven himself a most promising student and gaining a degree in English Language and Translation at the Bu-Ali Sina University of Hamedan, in 2013 Ramin came to Italy to pursue his research in Iranian studies at La Sapienza. While pursuing a course for a bachelor’s degree he studied, among other subjects, Persian Language and Translation with Professor Paola Orsatti and he graduated with me with a dialectology thesis on the Gilaki dialect of Shaft, his hometown in Gilan, a province in northern Iran lying along the Caspian Sea. Now Ramin is about to start the second and final year of the master’s degree course. He is perfectly up to date with exams and has already started work on his master’s thesis dealing with the linguistic analysis of Gilaki oral texts with Fieldworks Language Explorer and the historical phonology of his native language. For the future, Ramin dreams of continuing his education with a doctorate in Europe and being able to devote himself to Iranian linguistics and dialectology.

Given his impressive performance in his university studies, until last year Ramin enjoyed scholarships awarded by Iranian authorities to study in Italy. Recently, however, Iranian institutions have abolished study abroad scholarships because of the economic difficulties the country is facing and Ramin has found himself without a grant or any other financial support.

In order to continue with his studies, and for lack of a better alternative, this summer Ramin worked on the night shift in a supermarket and studied during the day but, because of the mounting fatigue, he ended up four days at the hospital and had to quit his job.

Now Ramin needs your support to fulfil his dream.

Our goal

Ramin still has about fifteen months of study ahead of him to attend the last courses, take the exams, and finish his thesis, which he expects to defend in January 2020. My goal, which I hope will become yours, is to raise enough funds to enable Ramin to finish his studies at La Sapienza with good results, coping with university fees, the purchase of books, and the costs of accommodation, transportation, and daily life in an expensive city like Rome.

Voci dal Ghilan: sostegno a Ramin per la tesi magistrale di dialettologia iranica a Roma

Mi chiamo Mauro Maggi e insegno Filologia iranica a Roma. Ramin Hassanzadeh Nodehi è un mio studente.

Questa campagna di finanziamento collettivo intende sostenere e finanziare il progetto di studio e di ricerca di Ramin.

Insegno Filologia iranica all’Università La Sapienza dal 2008. Tra i miei lavori recenti c’è un profilo della storia della lingua persiana dall’antichità a oggi scritto con Paola Orsatti per The Oxford Handbook of Persian Linguistics (New York, 2018). Nei miei anni alla Sapienza ho avuto la fortuna e il privilegio di avere diversi studenti iraniani, che stimolano e arricchiscono le mie ricerche e la mia comprensione dei problemi della filologia iranica. Ramin è uno di questi, entusiasta, desideroso di imparare e appassionato alla ricerca.

Dopo brillanti studi superiori e una laurea in Lingua e traduzione inglese all’Università Bu-Ali Sina di Hamedan, nel 2013 Ramin è venuto in Italia per approfondire gli studi iranici alla Sapienza. Durante il corso di laurea di primo livello ha tra l’altro studiato Lingua e traduzione persiana con la professoressa Paola Orsatti e si è laureato con me con una tesi di dialettologia sul dialetto ghilaki di Shaft, sua citta natale in Ghilan, regione dell’Iran nord-occidentale affacciata sul Mar Caspio. Ora Ramin sta per iniziare il secondo e ultimo anno del corso di laurea magistrale, è perfettamente in regola con gli esami e ha già iniziato il lavoro sulla tesi magistrale dedicata all’analisi linguistica di testi orali ghilaki con Fieldworks Language Explorer e alla fonetica storica della sua lingua materna. Per il futuro Ramin sogna di continuare la sua formazione con un dottorato in Europa e di potersi dedicare alla linguistica e dialettologia iranica.

Grazie ai notevoli risultati dei suoi studi universitari, fino all’anno scorso Ramin ha goduto di borse di studio concesse da autorità iraniane per studiare in Italia. Di recente, però, le istituzioni iraniane hanno abolito le borse di studio per l’estero a causa delle difficoltà economiche che il paese attraversa e Ramin si è ritrovato senza borsa e senza altre risorse economiche.

Per mantenersi agli studi, e in mancanza di alternative migliori, quest’estate Ramin ha lavorato di notte in un supermercato e ha studiato di giorno, ma per la fatica è finito quattro giorni all'ospedale e ha dovuto lasciare il lavoro.

Ora Ramin ha bisogno del vostro sostegno per realizzare il suo sogno.

Il nostro obiettivo

Ramin ha ancora davanti a sé circa quindici mesi di studio per seguire gli ultimi corsi, fare gli esami e finire la tesi, che conta di discutere nel gennaio 2020. Il mio obiettivo, che spero diventi anche il vostro, è di raccogliere abbastanza fondi che permettano a Ramin di concludere gli studi alla Sapienza con buoni risultati facendo fronte alle tasse universitarie, all’acquisto dei libri e alle spese di alloggio, di trasporto e di vita quotidiana in una città costosa come Roma.
