UNA CASA VIRTUALE PER L'ARTE IR-RITATA

La storia dietro al progetto

Nel 1990 abbiamo dato vita alla cooperativa Sensibili alle foglie pubblicando Nel bosco di Bistorco.

Nelle bandelle di questo primo libro gli autori rivolgevano un appello ai lettori, che venivano invitati a condividere i loro linguaggi espressivi, nella convinzione che questi ultimi siano una potente risorsa creativa per sopravvivere nelle istituzioni totali come in quelle ordinarie.

Molti hanno risposto direttamente inviando i loro lavori di arte ir-ritata, altri sono passati attraverso il tramite di vari centri fondati allo scopo di aiutare persone recluse a esprimersi e a sopravvivere alla triste realtà di una non vita: il laboratorio di pittura del Padiglione 8° del S. Maria della Pietà di Roma, La Tinaia di Firenze, i laboratori nati presso i Dipartimenti di salute mentale di Ischia (NA), Ponticelli (Na), Giugliano (Na), Castelnuovo nei monti (RE); il laboratorio del Progetto Ulisse, nato all’interno della Casa di Reclusione di Rebibbia, l’atelier dell’Ospedale Psichiatrico Giudiziario di Castiglione delle Stiviere (Mn). Altri materiali sono stati raccolti dalla comunità di S. Benedetto al Porto di Genova, dal Ser.T. di Maglie (Le), dai laboratori di creatività dell’Ospedale Psichiatrico Giudiziario di S. Eframo (Na).

Così è nata una raccolta che oggi ospita circa un migliaio opere – dipinti, disegni, scritture, diari, quaderni, quadri, scarabocchi – tracciate sui più diversi supporti.

Si tratta di opere che parlano della sofferenza della reclusione – carceri, manicomi, opg, bracci della morte – ma anche del malessere della normalità – scuola, mondo del lavoro, ambienti giovanili, strada. Questi linguaggi espressivi sono accompagnati da schede che illustrano il percorso istituzionale e creativo dei loro autori e delle loro autrici.

Fin qui abbiamo valorizzato queste opere con mostre itineranti. Siamo anche stati ospiti di Dora Garcia nel Padiglione spagnolo della Biennale di Venezia 2011 e abbiamo recentemente esposto una selezione di opere presso l'Ambasciata svizzera a Roma. Nel 2016 parteciperemo all'esposizione mondiale “Donostia-San Sebastian Capitale della cultura 2016”.

Il progetto

Crediamo che queste opere debbano essere un patrimonio comune, che debbano essere visibili da chiunque lo desideri, in qualsiasi parte del mondo. Perciò vogliamo aprire una galleria online che consenta a tutti di conoscere queste potenti espressioni di creatività.

A tal fine chiediamo il vostro contributo. Per realizzarla, infatti, dobbiamo sostenere dei costi che ci permettano di catalogare e fotografare le differenti opere, scannerizzare i manoscritti, sostenere le spese relative alla digitalizzazione dei documenti e alla realizzazione del sito ospite, nonché tradurre i testi in inglese.

Non abbiamo fissato un budget e non prevediamo ricompense, se non un ringraziamento a ciascun sostenitore, che apparirà in una pagina dedicata della galleria virtuale. La quantità di opere che pubblicheremo sarà commisurata all'entità dei fondi raccolti.

Gli autori di queste opere hanno riposto la loro fiducia in noi. Ci hanno chiesto di portare le loro espressioni creative in tutto il mondo e permettere loro di incontrare la società che un tempo ha rifiutato i loro creatori. Chiedono una possibilità, per una volta nella loro vita, di essere accettati, e guardati come qualcosa di più che persone malate di mente, prigionieri, senzatetto, gente di strada. Questo glielo vorremmo garantire, se ci aiutate, unendo le forze, e aprendo questa galleria online che non conosce confini né esclusioni.

Identità creatrici: i nostri autori e le loro opere

La creatività ha molte facce: può presentarsi come un improvviso bisogno di disegnare o dipingere o come un'idea inaspettata che chiede di essere scolpita o scritta. È un impulso che non possiamo controllare, ma possiamo accettare il dono che porta: la libertà. Se scegliamo di seguire il percorso della creatività siamo liberi da tutti i confini, siano essi fisici o mentali, da tutti gli stereotipi e i pregiudizi. A volte la creatività si presenta più prepotentemente nell'ora più buia, quando tutto il resto sembra essere perso, offre un'ancora, qualcosa a cui aggrapparci, una risorsa vitale che ci può salvare da morte e follia.

I nostri autori lo hanno scoperto nel corso delle loro vite, mentre si trovavano confrontati a limitazioni, esclusioni, solitudini e altre sofferenze. La creatività li ha aiutati a superare questi momenti difficili, permettendo loro di crearsi un'identità che vivesse in altri mondi e altre situazioni attraverso diversi stati di coscienza. Alcuni di essi hanno scelto di continuare a dipingere e sono diventati artisti riconosciuti, come Domenico Giglio e Tonino Loris Paroli, altri, tra i quali Franca Settembrini, Giordano Gelli e Marco Raugei – internati per molto tempo in ospedali psichiatrici giudiziari o in manicomio – sono presenti in importanti gallerie d'arte, come il Museo Aracine di Parigi e il Museo dell'Art Brut di Losanna. Alcuni, invece, hanno semplicemente cessato la loro attività creativa una volta superato il momento della difficoltà. Il valore che attribuiamo alle opere raccolte non è tuttavia quello puramente artistico: ci interessa prima di tutto il messaggio che esse portano, il significato che queste persone dimenticate hanno scelto di dare ai loro lavori.

Crediamo che questo debba diventare un patrimonio comune, valorizzato e aperto al mondo, anche virtualmente.

A VIRTUAL HOME FOR IR-RITATED ART

The story behind the project

Sensibili alle foglie is an Italian cooperative focusing on social research and publishing.

Since 1990 some of its founders, among which Nicola Valentino and Renato Curcio, have been collecting artistic paintings, scribbles, sculptures, bizarre manuscripts born from the need to make life bearable, used as vital resources in moments of difficulty.

These works originate both in total institutions such as prisons, psychiatric centres, OPGs (judiciary psychiatric hospitals) and in ordinary institutions like schools, offices, hospitals, nursing houses. They space from reclusive experiences to unease in normality, analysing different states of mind and backgrounds.

We currently own a collection counting more than a thousand works and documents of intense cultural worth, each telling its own story of sorrow, reclusion and exclusion through unusual perspectives that sometimes still can be full of hope.

It is important to understand that we are not talking about traditional art. Our Authors are surely no commonly accepted painters and writers. They found art and creativity while confronted to difficult situations and held on to them as their only survival chances. We do not primarily claim the beauty or artistic worth of their works but we mostly stand for the importance of their message, for the meaning those forgotten people chose to give them.

The Project

We believe those works should be a common heritage, that they should be visible by everyone who wishes to see them. We therefore want to open an online gallery, in order to allow the world to meet those powerful expressions of bursting creativity. We need however to collect money as to catalogue the different works and to scan the manuscripts, to pay for an hosting website, for the translation of the Authors' biographies into English and for the photography work.

We need YOUR help in order to highlight those unique works that could be considered Art Brut according to Dubuffet's definition and could be inserted in the wider genre of Outsider Art but that we chose to name “Ir-ritated Art” (it's a wordplay with the Italian word irritata, that stands for both “irritated” and “out of the traditional rites”). We need you to back us, in order to give the world the chance to meet those incredible, sometimes grotesque but always fascinating works that belong to everyone who has an open mind and an open heart.

Our Authors put their faith in us. They asked us to bring their creative expressions all around the world and have them meet the society that once refused their creators. They ask for a chance, once in their lifetime, to be accepted and regarded as something more than mentally ill men, prisoners, street people. We can grant this much to them, together, joining forces and opening this online gallery that knows no borders nor exclusions.

Creative identities (or “Our Authors and their works”)

Creativity has many faces. It can manifest itself as a sudden urge to draw or paint, as an unexpected idea that just needs to be sculpted or written down. Sometimes it comes to us in mixed forms, that require both drawing and poetry, scribble and lyrics. We can not control it but we may accept the gift it brings: freedom. If we go down the path of creativity, we are free from all borders, may that be the physical ones or the mental ones, from all stereotypes and judgements. When our hand and our mind become one, when what we see is what we are creating, than nothing can stop us or hurt us. Sometimes, creativity bursts out in the darkest hour, when everything else seems lost. It offers an anchor, something to hold on to, a vital resource that can save lives from death and madness.

Our Authors discovered as much in the course of their lives, while confronted to limitations, exclusions, solitude and regret. It helped them overcome these hard moments, allowing them to form a creative identity that lived in other worlds, in other situations through different states of consciousness.

Some of them chose to keep on painting and became internationally recognized artists, like Domenico Giglio, others have some of their works exhibited in the Lausanne Art Brut Museum and in the Aracine Gallery in France, among which Franca Settembrini, Giordano Gelli and Marco Raugei. Some just ceased their creative activity when they overcame the moment of difficulty.

Nicola Valentino, Renato Curcio and Stefano Petrelli started this collection with the aim to discover the thousand resources used by conflicted people in order to survive hardships and confront with them. In 1990, when they still were convicts, they published “Nel Bosco di Bistorco” (Into Bistorco's Woods) and sent out an appeal to other institutionalized people. Many answered directly, sending their own works of ir-ritated art, others passed through various centres founded in order to help imprisoned people to express themselves and survive the sad reality of a non-life (La Tinaia in Florence, 8th Pavillon at St. Maria della Pietà in Rome, San Benedetto al Porto in Genoa and many others).

Our cooperative has brought these works all over Italy, in itinerant exhibitions that gained appraisal and prompted interesting and enriching confrontations. We have also taken part in the Biennale in Venice (2011) as hosts in the Spanish Pavillon, invited by the visual artist Dora Garcia, and we have recently exhibited our collection at the Swiss Embassy in Rome. In 2016 we will be attending the Donostia-San Sebastian European Capital of Culture worldwide exhibition.

We believe this is a common patrimony that needs to be highlighted, preserved and opened to the world, even virtually.
