Storytelling through Photography

Il Kosovo é un paese multietnico, si compone di 6 etnie differenti che vivono delle volte equilibri difficili. Mitrovica é una città situata al nord del paese, é divisa in due da un fiume, l'Ibar. Ma la divisione reale é quella che avviene fra le due comunità che la abitano : al sud vive la comunità albanese, che riconosce lo stato Kosovaro, usa la moneta ufficiale del Kosovo( l'euro, si lo so é assurdo) ; al nord invece c'é una delle più grandi enclavi serbe del paese, la popolazione non riconosce la giurisdizione né le amministrazioni ufficiali, usano una lingua diversa (il serbo) una moneta diversa (il dinaro serbo) e sia le banche che la posta sono serbe. 

Questa situazione di confusione é difficile da risolvere data la dolorosa memoria storica con la quale entrambe le popolazioni devono fare i conti, e l'imperversare di violenza simbolica e nazionalismi vari che rendono le comunicazioni e la circolazione in questa città molto difficoltose. 
Con una Ong locale, Diakonie, che ha il pregio di essere completamente multientica, che ha fatto la scelta, molto coraggiosa, di costruire un centro per la gioventù proprio sul ponte che separa queste due etnie e controllato 24/24h dalla NATO, abbiamo deciso di lanciare un workshop di fotografia, tramite il quale vorremmo lavorare sul difficile tema della riconciliazione. La classe che abbiamo costituito rispecchia la popolazione presente nel paese ed é composta da 9 studenti albanesi, 6 studenti serbi, 3 studenti appartenenti alla comunità RAE (Romani, Ashkalij, Egyptian) e 2 studenti bosniaci. In alcuni casi questa sarà la prima volta che questi giovani hanno accesso ad una forma d'istruzione, questo é soprattutto vero per i ragazzi della comunità RAE, esclusi dal sistema scolastico e lavorativo. Insieme studieremo sia le basi della fotografia che quelle dello story-telling. Il nostro obiettivo sarà quello di aiutare gli studenti a realizzare un reportage che racconti la difficile convivenza e le speranze per il futuro. Vorremmo spingerci ancora più lontano, riuscendo a portare i nostri lavori in Europa, in quest'Europa così presente nel paese ma così lontana per gli abitanti kosovari che si vedono negati qualunque possibilità di viaggiare (l'iter per ricevere i visti é lungo e molto costoso) 
Come ben potete immaginare abbiamo bisogno di tutto, da fondi a visibilità.
Cerchiamo sia aiuto per aiutarci a comprare il materiale fotografico (abbiamo deciso di lavorare con le Usa&getta, sia per lo sviluppo delle foto). Ma anche per darci una mano a trovare spazi espositivi che vogliano ospitare la mostra finale del lavoro ed il dibattito che ne seguirebbe.

The Theme « Bridge Generation »

Mitrovica is a city divided and united by a bridge, this city hosts young people coming from different communities.

In the nothern part lives the serbian community, in the southern part the albanian. After the war this division was so strong that today the Austerlitz bridge is not only a bridge but a border as well for many reasons. The bridge is controlled 24h/24 by the kosovan mission of NATO, the KFOR.

In the northern part the community doen not recognize the kosovan state and uses another currency and another language. Crossing the bridge is something that people do not do very often, and the youth is constantly exposed to symbolic violence and propaganda. 

The purpose of this class will be to put together a multi-ethnic class to work on the philosophical meaning of a bridge.To help them overcome their differencies and deal with this past, so present for them.

Every student will have to work on their own definition of the idea of what a BRIDGE stands for ( as a connection, as a separation etc.. ) and try to narrate his/her own vision of Mitrovica and its everyday life. Both theoretical and practical this workshop will help develop and change the idea of the Austerlitz bridge, from monument of separation to a link where exchanges can be made, where friendship and cultural exchange can happen.

The purpose will be to work on differences in an active way. Using art as a way to overcome the ideologies that separate the communities living in the area. We will use poetry and philosophy as well to help the students to think differently exposing them to other and similar situation of separation and reconciliation.

Every student will have to work on his own project and each one of them will be in charge of his/her own reportage, but, in order to narrate their story they will have to work two by two, every one will be assistant and photographer,that will help develop the skills of being able to work as a group without separation of any kind. (linguistic or cultural). They will have to work together and help each other to be able to finish their projects.  

The class

Class will be composed of high school students, aged between 15 and 20 years old.

Ethnical composition of the class :

20 students, to have a full representation of the youth of the city we will chose :

-9 Albanians

-6 Serbians

-3 Rae (Romani, Ashkalji, Egyptians), We will chose 2 girls and 1 boy

-2 Bosnians

VERSION FRANçAISE 

Le Kosovo est un pays multi ethnique, il se compose de 6 différents communautés qui vivent parfois des équilibres difficiles. Mitrovica/Mitrovicë est une ville qui se trouve au nord du pays au centre de la ville passe un fleuve, L'ibar. Ce fleuve est devenu comme une frontière invisible est non ufficielle : au nord de la ville vit la communauté serbe, qui ne reconnait pas l'état kosovien, qui utilise une monnaie différente ( le dinar serbe) et une langue différente, et où toutes les institutions, économique et non, son serbes; au sud vit la communauté albanaise, qui utilise l'euro, la monnaie officielle du Kosovo et où on parle albanais.

Cette situation de confusion est difficile à résoudre pour plein de raisons qui vont de la difficile mémoire historique avec laquelle les deux communautés doivent se confronter mais aussi à cause de la grande violence symbolique et à cause des nationalismes qui rendent la communication et la circulation de ces deux communautés très compliqué.

Avec une ONG locale, Diakonie, qui a le mérite d'avoir fait le choix courageux de construire un centre pour la jeunesse sur le pont qui divise ces deux communautés et qui est contrôlé 24h/24 par l'OTAN, on a décidé d'imaginer un workshop de photographie qui aura lieu cette été.

On a constitué une classe de 20 élèves entre 15 et 20 ans, composée de façon à représenter la population qui habite cette ville, il y aura :

9 élèves de la communauté albanaise,

6 élèves de la communauté serbe

3 élèves de la communauté RAE (Romani, Ashkalji, Egyptian)

2 élèves de la communauté bosniaque

Pour certains de ces élèves, notamment les ressortissants de la communauté RAE, victimes de l'exclusion, ce sera la première fois qu'ils ont accès à une forme d'étude.

Notre projet sera celui de porter cette classe, à travers l'expression photographique, à travailler et à réfléchir sur des thèmes fondamentales comme la réconciliation, l'identité et l'exclusion.

Mais ce n'est pas fini, on voudrais aller encore plus loin..

On voudrait après exposer les travaux de ces jeunes dans des villes européennes, les mêmes villes qu'eux mêmes ne pourront peut être jamais visiter, car l'iter pour obtenir un visa, même touristique, est très onéreux et très difficile.

Pour réaliser ce workshop on a pas besoin de beaucoup, mais de petites donations qui puissent nous aider à acheter le matériel photo ( on a décidé de travailler avec des appareils jetables) et pour après payer pour le développement et l'impression des photos.
