L’evoluzione del passato, la rivoluzione del futuro
Se camminando per le vie della città rallenti il passo e indugi, entri in un portone e ti fermi nel cortile, pian piano potrai, affinando i sensi, sentire suoni di ferro e umanità, annusare odori densi di materiale in trasformazione, scorgere mani callose e sguardi concentrati, movimenti studiati e forme di identità: scoprirai un popolo nascosto che non insegue il fragore, che riscrive il futuro grazie alla consapevolezza del passato e dei segreti dei mestieri di un tempo, pregni di ingegno, memoria e creatività.
Un popolo che ogni giorno disegna un’alternativa all’alienazione e all’oblio.
Sono gli artigiani delle botteghe dall’odore denso e la luce fioca che fanno di ogni prodotto un pezzo unico dotato di anima. Che strizzano gli occhi e sudano e fanno del loro lavoro un’arte.
Hanno mani sapienti e strumenti antichi. Forgiano forme con la forza trasformatrice del fuoco, con l’energia rigeneratrice dell’aria. Imprimono su ogni elemento un pezzo della loro personalità, con il loro saper fare tramandato da generazioni. Lasciano sulle strade un segno di umanità. Sono persone che hanno preso una strada talmente vecchia da essere nuova.
R-evoluzione racconta le storie degli artigiani che dedicano la loro vita al saper fare, impegnato e competente, personale e tradizionale.
Con sguardo discreto e curioso l'autore e fotografo Virgilio Ardy ha portato alla luce le storie dei luoghi nascosti, delle attività che si celano dietro i portoni e dentro i cortili dei palazzi del quartiere Vanchiglia di Torino.
Incontriamo così il burattinaio e il restauratore, il pellettiere e il verniciatore a cera e stoppino. I calli delle loro mani ci parlano di una fatica gratificante. I loro movimenti lenti sono guidati da uno sguardo attento ai dettagli che nessuna industria potrebbe avere. I loro gesti e le loro parole ci trasportano in un mondo dal ritmo cadenzato e consapevole, per proporre un nuovo modo di immaginare il futuro.

The evolution of the past, the revolution of the future
If, while walking in the streets of the city, you slow down and linger, enter a door and stop in the courtyard for a while, if you sharpen your senses, you will gradually hear sounds of iron and humanity, smell odours dense of material undergoing transformation, get a glimpse of rough hands and concentrated glances, see experienced movements and forms of identity: you will discover a hidden people, off the beaten path and away from the hustle and bustle, who are rewriting the future thanks to the awareness of the past and the secrets of the old crafts, imbued with wit, memory and creativity.
A people who every day draw an alternative to alienation and oblivion.
They are the artisans working in the intensely odorous and dimly lighted workshops, who craft each product into a unique piece with its own soul. Those who squint their eyes and sweat, and turn their job into art.
They work with their skilful hands and old tools. They forge shapes by means of the transforming power of fire, the regenerative energy of air. They impress a piece of their personality in each element, with their know-how handed down for generations. They leave a mark of humanity in the streets. They are people who have chosen such an old road to be considered as new.
R-evolution tells the stories of the artisans who devote their lives to know-how, based on commitment, competence, personal innovation and tradition.
Casting a discreet and curious glance, author and photographer Virgilio Ardy has brought to light the stories of secluded places, of activities hidden behind the doors and in the courtyards of the Vanchiglia district in Turin.
We can thus meet the puppeteer and the restorer, the leather craftsman and the painter who works with wax and wick. The calluses in their hands tell us about a rewarding effort. Their slow movements are driven by a keen eye for details that no industry could ever
have. Their gestures and their words take us to a world of dedication and awareness, to propose a new way of conceiving the future.
Nota d'intenti dell'autore
Il lavoro di R-Evoluzione nasce dall'idea di valorizzare e di ridare visibilità soprattutto a quei mestieri che stanno letteralmente sparendo: valorizzare sì l'artigiano che fa le cose a mano, ma soprattutto quel tipo di artigianato che rischia di essere sostituito dall'industria del basso costo e infima qualità...
Le fotografie sono scattate in bianco e nero a 1/60 di secondo per enfatizzare la poesia dei movimenti e rispettare la naturalezza dello sguardo, non immobilizzando la danza che gli artigiani compiono per plasmare la materia.
L'autore: Virgilio Ardy, classe 1980, è nato a Ivrea e vive a Torino.
Appassionato di fotografia da sempre, tanto da essere riuscito a farla diventare la sua professione.
Ha approfondito la sua formazione tecnica e artistica, oltre che attraverso l'esperienza lavorativa, tramite la collaborazione con diversi fotografi tra cui Stefano Venturini, con il quale collabora attualmente, e frequentando workshop di professionisti come Ernesto Bazan e Marianna Santoni.
Ha svolto l'attività di agente di commercio e di docente per la formazione del personale in aula e on-line su piattaforme e-learning; due esperienze che gli hanno permesso di sviluppare una spiccata capacità organizzativa e di interazione con le persone.
Attualmente realizza servizi fotografici aziendali, di matrimoni, comunioni, cerimonie e per ogni altro evento. Gestisce e fotografa eventi sportivi, in collaborazione con altri professionisti, sia in strutture chiuse, come palazzetti dello sport e del ghiaccio, sia all'aperto nel caso delle gare di Triathlon.
Nel 2012 è diventato fotografo certificato di Google Maps Street View.
Organizza workshop di approfondimento delle tecniche fotografiche tra le quali, ad esempio, quello ricorrente sullo Storico Carnevale di Ivrea che, per l'edizione 2016, ha visto la compartecipazione di Marianna Santoni.
La sua grande passione resta la fotografia di viaggio; tra gli ultimi lavori fatti spiccano due suggestivi viaggi in Islanda e Scozia.
Photographer’s Statement of Intent
The R-Evolution project comes from the idea of enhancing and giving new visibility to those trades that are literally disappearing: putting in the limelight the craftsman who creates handmade objects, but above all that kind of craftsmanship that is likely to be replaced by the low-cost poor quality industry...
The pictures are taken in black and white at 1/60 of a second, so as to emphasize the poetry of the movements and respect the natural look, not immobilizing the dance of the artisans when shaping their material.
The photographer: Virgilio Ardy was born in 1980 in Ivrea and now lives in Turin.
He has always loved photography, so much so that he turned it into his job.
Besides through his work experience, he refined his technical and artistic training by working with different photographers including Stefano Venturini, with whom he currently collaborates, and attending workshops delivered by professionals such as Ernesto Bazan and Marianna Santoni.
Virgilio used to work as a commercial agent and teacher for staff training in classrooms and on-line e-learning platforms. These two experiences enabled him to develop strong organizational skills and interaction with people.
He currently does photo reportages for companies, weddings, communions, ceremonies and any other occasions. He manages and photographs sports events, in collaboration with other professionals, both indoors, such as sports halls and ice arenas, and outdoors, for triathlon races.In 2012 he became a Google Street View trusted photographer.
Virgilio organizes in-depth workshops on photographic techniques including, for example, one held every year on the Historic Carnival of Ivrea, where in 2016 course Marianna Santoni took part as a co-trainer.
His great passion is travel photography. Among the last works, particularly worth mentioning are two striking trips: Iceland and Scotland

Giovanni Aghetta- Aghetta RestauriRestauratore ligneo, doratore e laccatore. La bottega, tramandata in tre generazioni, nasce nei primi del ‘900 a Torino. The shop, opened in 2000, participated in the restoration and staging of the Accorsi Foundation. It provides small interventions of wood restoration and repair of wood veneer furniture, as well as wood decoration.

Obiettivi
Il progetto si propone di fare un viaggio alla riscoperta dei mestieri della tradizione e prevede il racconto delle storie di vita delle eccellenze dell’hand made attraverso fotografie e video e si prefigge di produrre:
- un libro fotografico accompagnato dalle storie di vita degli artigiani
- un webdocumantario che coniuga fotografie, video e musica originale composta da Umberto De Marchi per portarci alla scoperta delle storie di vita delle eccellenze dell’hand made e degli antichi mestieri
- una visita guidata e animata per i quartieri, alla scoperta delle botteghe degli artigiani e dei loro prodotti.
Our objectives
The project aims at rediscovering the traditional trades and crafts, collecting the life stories of outstanding craftsmen through photographs and videos, producing:
- A photo book completed with the life stories of the artisans
- A web documentary combining photographs, videos and original music composed by Umberto De Marchi to embark on a journey to explore the stories of the people behind handmade excellence and old crafts
- A guided and organised visit to the neighbourhood, to discover the shops of the artisans and their products.
Stadio di sviluppo del progetto
Il progetto ha raggiunto il suo primo traguardo nel giugno 2015 con l'esposizione di una mostra fotografica in occasione del Vanchiglia Lov, a cui è seguita la mostra alla vineria Porto Ribeca di Torino: “Il catalogo degli artigiani che stanno scomparendo”.
Visto il successo della mostra la Città di Torino ha riproposto il percorso fotografico con l'Esposizione a Palazzo di Città nel marzo 2016.
Il 25 maggio 2016 viene inaugurata la mostra fotografica R-Evoluzione presso il Circolo del Design in via Giolitti 26/a Torino: Il lavoro degli artigiani raccontato per immagini in una mostra a Torino
Project development stage
The project has reached its first milestone in June 2015 with a photographic exhibition during the event Vanchiglia Lov, followed by another exhibition at the Porto Ribeca winery of Turin: “The catalogue of the craftsmen who are disappearing”
Given the success of the exhibition, the City of Turin has made another Display at the Town Hall in March 2016.
On 25th May 2016 the photo exhibition R-Evolution was opened at the Circolo del Design in via Giolitti 26/a in Turin: The work of the craftsmen told through images in an exhibition in Turin
Il lavoro ha già ottenuto i patrocini di CNA Torino, Città di Torino, Camera di Commercio e Regione Piemonte, inoltre ha ricevuto un'importantissima lettera di adesione di Marianna Santoni.
The work is supported by CNA [i.e. National Confederation for the Craft Sector and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises] -Turin section, City of Turin, Chamber of Commerce and the Piedmont Region. It also received a very important advocacy letter by Marianna Santoni.
