Sorescu.Experimental. – Chapter II

The Italian premiere of Marin Sorescu’s play

Paracliserul, written by Marin Sorescu in 1970, is the second chapter of Sorescu.Experimental., a theatrical research project directed by Mateea Marin, dedicated to rediscovering and reinterpreting the work of one of the most important Romanian playwrights of the 20th century.

The play tells the story of a man’s solitude as he confronts God, his own limitations, and the absence of answers, finding himself faced with some of the deepest questions of human existence: What does it mean to believe? How much are we willing to wait, endure and change in order to find meaning in our lives?

“What are we, the others, supposed to do? We, the many, but the others! After you have done everything on your own, what is left for us, those at the bottom of all the things already done?”

The direction of Mateea Marin focuses on the actor’s body, silence, rhythm, repetition and the direct relationship with the audience, transforming the protagonist’s search into a shared experience.

For the first time in Italian

Paracliserul is being translated and performed in its entirety in Italian for the first time.

The translation by Mihaela Balint, with the contribution of Richard Butler, represents an important act of cultural mediation: a text deeply rooted in Romanian culture enters into direct dialogue with an Italian audience.

The project was born from the collaboration between Asociația Ataraxia and Teatro Anton Pann in Râmnicu Vâlcea, with the support of La MaMa Umbria International, which hosted an artistic residency dedicated to the development and research of the project.

The Italian Tour

In September 2026, Paracliserul will travel through Italy, bringing the project to Florence, Signa and Rome:

September 13 – Florence
Sala Ex Leopoldine
with the support of Kordelia

Date to be confirmed – Signa
Sala Blu – Centro Iniziative Teatrali

September 15 – Rome
Accademia di Romania
XVII International Propatria Festival

The Italian presentation also takes on a particular significance in 2026, a year dedicated to cultural dialogue between Romania and Italy, and as we commemorate 90 years since the birth and 30 years since the death of Marin Sorescu.

Why We Need Your Help

To make this tour possible, we need to cover travel costs, flights, accommodation, technical staff fees and the company’s logistics.

The tour is already scheduled and the first departures are approaching. We therefore need to raise at least €1,000 as soon as possible in order to purchase the flights and confirm accommodation. Our maximum fundraising target is €1,500, which will allow us to cover the essential costs of the three Italian performances.

Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a real difference.

By supporting us, you are not only helping a theatre production travel: you are helping bring Marin Sorescu’s work to an Italian audience in Italian for the first time, while contributing to the creation of a cultural bridge between Romania and Italy through theatre.

Help us bring Paracliserul to Italy.

The language changes. The questions remain.

There is a space between man and God.
Paracliserul is born within that space.
And today, for the first time in Italian, it entrusts itself to the audience.
