Panta Reno: tutto scorre

Pantareno è il racconto di un viaggio improbabile: in dieci giorni abbiamo tentato di discendere il fiume Reno da Basilea a Rotterdam, 800 km a bordo di un piccolo gommone con un motore due cavalli. Il progetto nasce dalla volontà di produrre un documentario che indaghi il rapporto fiume-territorio e allo stesso tempo ripercorra una storia familiare.

Nel 1958 Paolo Camerlenghi, il nonno di Ettore, insieme al fratello e ad un amico, discendeva lo stesso fiume su un mezzo militare residuato della seconda guerra mondiale, documentando l’avventura con una videocamera in super8. Panta Reno racconta il tentativo di inseguire la storia del nonno, un viaggio volutamente lento con l'obiettivo di raccogliere prospettive diverse su un oggetto naturale che ridisegna i confini e le storie di milioni di persone.

Durante il viaggio, continui imprevisti ci hanno permesso di scoprire e farci raccontare le storie di molte persone lungo il fiume. Se quella del nonno era stata un’impresa da record, con centinaia di chilometri percorsi in una corsa contro il tempo (100 km al giorno), il nostro viaggio, sessant’anni dopo, si è rivelato una disavventura continua. Tuttavia, sono state proprio questa notevole lentezza, le tappe obbligate dovute ai problemi tecnici e la diversità di mezzi con cui abbiamo potuto e dovuto proseguire che ci hanno permesso di entrare nel vivo della nostra stessa storia, permettendoci quindi di acquisire una prospettiva ancora diversa sul fiume e sui suoi tempi.

Abbiamo potuto intervistare capitani di chiatte, yacht, operai, passanti, guardiani delle chiuse, meccanici, migranti italiani e filosofi. Il filo conduttore che tiene insieme queste interviste è il fiume Reno, intorno al quale gravitano le vite di tutte le persone che abbiamo incontrato.

Abbiamo conosciuto Christian che da più di 10 anni lavora in una chiusa: apre e chiude le porte alle navi, felice di fare esattamente quello che fa. Abbiamo intervistato il capitano e proprietario di una chiatta fluviale su cui vive con l’intera famiglia: il fiume è la sua vita che non potrebbe immaginare diversamente. Abbiamo stretto amicizia con Mario, operaio calabrese in Germania da quando è un ragazzo. Lavora alla BASF, un gigantesco complesso chimico industriale sul Reno e con i suoi racconti ci riporta in Italia, a Carfizzi, un piccolo paese arbëreshë in provincia di Crotone. Carfizzi è ora un comune in via di spopolamento: quasi tutti i suoi abitanti si sono trasferiti a Ludwigshafen, paese dormitorio e satellite del gigante industriale.

La nostra narrazione, la storia della nostra discesa fluviale e la ricerca della memoria del nonno si intrecciano con le prospettive e con i racconti di chi abbiamo incontrato e senza il cui aiuto non avremmo potuto proseguire. Sovrapponendo questa molteplicità di storie proviamo a restituire la complessità di un oggetto naturale che è allo stesso tempo un vero e proprio spazio irreale e un centro di gravitazione che ridisegna le storie e le vite di milioni di persone, dalla Germania fino alla provincia di Crotone. Se infatti il mare è legato a uno o più immaginari precisi, il fiume, pur avendo un ruolo fondamentale nell’economia e nella vita di un paese, tende in effetti a non occupare un posto di rilievo nelle narrazioni collettive.

Perché finanziare questo progetto

L’impresa del nonno Paolo del 1958, scherzosamente mitizzata in famiglia, è stata per Ettore un’idea da inseguire, un collegamento diretto con il nonno sin da quando era piccolo. Dopo averne parlato con Luca, nel 2013 i due decidono di prendere di nascosto un piccolo gommone di famiglia e di provare a discendere il Po. Nell’estate del 2015 ripetono l’esperimento sul fiume Adige.

Ettore e Luca quindi propongono a Carlo e ad Alexis di ripercorrere il viaggio del nonno, questa volta con l’obiettivo di realizzarne un documentario. Il progetto ha vinto nella primavera 2016 il bando FuoriRotta, ideato da Andrea Segre, Matteo Calore e Simone Falso e promosso da Internazionale, Montura, Rai radio 2 insieme al Trento Film Festival. Al ritorno dal viaggio, Panta Reno si è guadagnato il premio Montura “via Appia” e la menzione speciale al Trento Film Festival 2017.

Abbiamo deciso di collaborare con una casa di produzione specializzata nella realizzazione di documentari, per quanto riguarda il montaggio, l’editing del suono, la color correction e color grading, il sound design e la sottotitolazione. Per far fronte a queste spese abbiamo avviato questa campagna e adesso abbiamo bisogno di voi!

Chi siamo

Ettore Camerlenghi è l’ideatore del progetto e membro fondatore dei Gommonauti. Di formazione naturalista e biologo, grande amante dei viaggi, svolge attività di ricerca scientifica in Amazzonia che alterna a progetti di inchiesta e reportage ambientale in qualità di giornalista.

Alexis Ftkas. L’occhio e la regia (con l’aiuto del resto dell’equipaggio) del documentario. Nasce a Bologna nel 1989, dopo una laurea in comunicazione e una specializzazione nell’audiovisivo, lavora a Milano come film maker e fotografo in vari ambiti. La sue grandi passioni sono l’ambito sociale e il documentario. Ha sviluppato progetti di fotografia partecipata nel carcere minorile di Bologna e realizzato progetti video nelle favelas di Salvador di Bahia, Brasile.

Luca Pozzolini. Nato nel 1990 a Bergamo, co-fondatore insieme a Ettore dei Gommonauti, si appassiona alle discese fluviali dopo avere esplorato in gommone il fiume Po e Adige. Di formazione fisioterapista, lavora in uno studio professionale a Bergamo. Ama viaggiare, si dedica a temi sociali e svolge volontariato in Italia e in Africa.

Carlo Bettinelli. Ha studiato e lavorato in agricoltura e agroecologia tra l’Italia e i Paesi Bassi. Ora vive a Rovereto (TN), dove lavora come coordinatore agri-culturale di un orto comunitario creato da diverse associazioni insieme a richiedenti asilo e volontari della città. La sua passione per le lente discese dei fiumi è stata accesa da Ettore e Luca. Dopo il Reno, Carlo vuole ora continuare a seguire questa passione esplorando fiumi vicini e lontani.

Panta Reno: tutto scorre

Pantareno is a story of a peculiar journey: in ten days we tried to descend the river Rhine from Basel (CH) to Rotterdam (NL), 800 km on a dinghy with a 2HP engine. The project started with the idea of making a documentary that would inquire the river-territory relationship and at the same time retrace a family history.

In 1958 Paolo Camerlenghi, Ettore's grandfather, together with his brother and a friend, was descending the river Rhine on a military boat from World War 2,  documenting the adventure with a super8 camera. Sixty years later Panta Reno narrates the attempt to follow the grandfather’s journey. An intentional slow journey with the aim of looking at a natural element from different perspectives, a natural element that redesigns the borders and the histories of millions of people.

Along the journey repeated accidents offered us the opportunity to meet, interview and collect the histories of those who daily  live by the river. If the grandfather’s endeavour had been a fortunate one, with hundreds of kilometers in a race against time, our trip, sixty years later, turned out to be a continuous misadventure. However, it was our incredible slow speed, the necessary stops due to technical problems and the diversity of means of transportation that gave us  the opportunity to experience the river  fully and to be able to gain a different perspective of the river and its pace

We have collected several hours of interviews to barge and yacht captains, laborers, people living by the river, locks guardians, mechanics, Italian migrants and philosophers. The thread that holds these interviews together is the Rhine river, around which the lives of all the people we have met revolve around.

We met Christian, who has been working for 10 years in a lock: he opens and closes the doors to the vessels, happy to do exactly what he does. We have interviewed the owner and captain of a river barge that lives on it with all his family: the river is his life and he cannot imagine anything different. We have become friends with Mario, a Calabrese factory worker who has  been living in Germany since he w as a teen. He has been working for the BASF factory, a gigantic chemical complex on the Rhine. With his tales he brings us back to Italy,to Carfizzi, a small arbëreshë town in the province of Crotone. Carfizzi is now undergoing depopulation, almost all its inhabitants moved to Ludwigshafen, dorm town and satellite of the industrial complex.

Our narration, the story of our river descent and the search for the  grandfather’s memories intertwine with the point of views and the tales of the people we met, without whom we couldn’t have continued our  journey.  Overlapping this multiplicity of stories we try to show the complexity of a natural environment (the river) that is also an emotional space and a center of gravitation of the stories and the lives of millions of people, from Germany to the province of Crotone. Whereas a lot of imaginary is  linked to the sea, the river tends to play a minor role in collective narratives, although it has a fundamental role in the economy and the life of a country.

Why fund this project?

Grandfather Paolo’s 1958 endeavour which has always  been  idealized in his family, has been for Ettore an idea to pursue since he was a child, in addition to being a direct connection with his grandfather. After talking about it with his  friend Luca, in 2013 Ettore and Luca decided to get the small family dinghy (without  his family  knowing  it) and try to descend the Po river. In the summer 2015 they repeated the experiment, this time on the river Adige.

Ettore and Luca then proposed to Carlo and Alexis to retrace the grandfather’s journey, this time with the aim of making a documentary out of it. In the spring 2016 the project won the FuoriRotta call, created  by Andrea Segre, Matteo Calore and Simone Falso and promoted by the magazine Internazionale, Montura, Rai Radio 2 together with Trento Film Festival. After the trip Panta Reno won the Montura award “via Appia” and the special mention at the Trento Film Festival 2017.

We have decided to collaborate with a production company specialized in documentaries as we need to work on the film and sound editing, color correction and color grading, sound design and subtitles. We have started this campaign to cope with these expenses and now we need your help!

Who are we?

Ettore Camerlenghi is the creator of the project and co-founder of Gommonauti. He is a naturalist and biologist, a great travel lover, he carries out scientific research in the Amazon, which he alternates with investigative reports and environmental reportages.

Alexis Ftkas. The eye and the direction of the documentary (with the help of the rest of the crew). He was born in Bologna in 1989. After a degree in Communication and a specialization in Audiovisual, he now works in Milano as a filmmaker and photographer. He  has  a  passion for social  issues  and documentaries. He developed photography projects in the juvenile prison of Bologna and made video projects in the favelas of Salvador de Bahia in Brasil.

Luca Pozzolini. He was born in Bergamo in 1990. Co-founder of the Gommonauti together with Ettore. He got passionate about river descents after having explored the river Po and Adige with a dinghy. He studied physiotherapy and works in Bergamo. He loves  travelling, he is dedicated to social issues and he volunteers in Italy and Africa.

Carlo Bettinelli. He studied and worked in agriculture and agroecology between Italy and The Netherlands. Now he lives in Rovereto (TN), where he works as an agro-cultural coordinator in a community garden created by several associations together with asylum seekers and volunteers. His passion for the slow river descents was sparked by Ettore and Luca. After the Rhine, Carlo wants to follow this passion exploring nearby and distant rivers.
