Life Screen è un libro di testi in lingua italiana dell’artista Flavio de Marco selezionati in vent’anni di riflessioni sull’arte. Il libro nasce come compendio al precedente Screen Life e raccoglie scritti di poetica artistica in forma di note di lavoro e libere riflessioni, memorie e cronache estetiche, racconti e saggi per cataloghi, articoli per riviste e recensioni cinematografiche. Sviluppato in ordine cronologico, il libro parte dal 1999, l’anno in cui l’artista inizia a dipingere le schermate del sistema operativo dei software informatici, e arriva al 2019, anno in cui viene maturato il ritorno alla rappresentazione della realtà che svilupperà negli anni successivi. 

“In un certo senso la motivazione dell’arte – come sosteneva con forza Luciano Anceschi già mezzo secolo fa – è il significato stesso dell’opera d’arte, poiché solo una piena consapevolezza del “fare” può giustificare l’azione rendendola significativa, ossia conferirle una ragion d’essere. L’artista (il pittore, ma non solo) scrive perché pensa, perché riflette sul proprio lavoro e dunque scrivendo fonda il proprio agire artistico, il quale – grazie al pensiero che lo sostiene – non potrà mai ridursi a mero mestiere o a particolare modalità pratica di sopravvivenza economica, ma diverrà appunto pensiero in opera” (dalla Postfazione di Sandro Sproccati)  

Il volume si snoda tra scritti di natura eterogenea, non solo teorici. Lo schermo inteso come nuovo paesaggio del contemporaneo, l’orizzonte come perdita della prospettiva fisica nella società digitale e il concetto di mimesi come perdita del pensiero analogico attraverso la copia numerica del reale, sono le riflessioni di poetica con cui si apre il libro. A queste se ne intrecciano altre sul sistema dell’arte e sul ruolo dell’artista attraverso esperienze dirette, a Documenta di Kassel o alla Biennale di Venezia, in cui si descrive un’epoca di invisibilità e di irrealtà generata dal valore performativo del pubblico. La Scuola Ferrarese, Tiziano, Vermeer, Courbet, Seurat, Malevich, Braque, Morandi, De Chirico, Burri, Rothko, Hamilton, Richter, ma anche colleghi più vicini, Pancrazzi, Consiglio, Bertolo, Samorì, nonché registi come Lynch, Sorrentino, Van Sant e filosofi come Ferrari, sono altri autori oggetto di riflessione nel libro. 

“Si potrebbe dire che proprio Life Screen dimostra che l’eclettismo di de Marco è ciò che rende il suo lavoro di pittore del tutto correlato a una dimensione esistenziale di esperienza vissuta: nella ricomposizione dell’infranto e nel recupero di una pienezza di rapporto con la vita – interessi, passioni, entusiasmi, emozioni profonde – che è resistenza estrema dinanzi al fatto che la vita viene continuamente allontanata dalle logiche e dai meccanismi della comunicazione sociale dominante. E questo è anche il modo in cui Life Screen ribadisce Screen Life, vale a dire quello stesso gesto di opposizione radicale che la pittura può scegliere di mettere in campo quando, appunto, essa si pone come strumento di critica dell’alienazione di massa e come recupero di una condizione autenticamente umana dell’agire artistico” (dalla Postfazione di Sandro Sproccati). 

Il LIBRO

Life Screen sarà realizzato in brossura cucita a filo refe, in formato 15 x 21, cm, per un totale di 528  pagine stampate su carta uso mano Pergraphica 90 gr.  La messa in stampa è prevista per luglio 2022. 

L'ARTISTA

Flavio de Marco è nato a Lecce nel 1975. Ha studiato al Liceo classico e all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna. La sua ricerca pittorica è stata esposta dalla fine degli anni '90 in diverse gallerie e musei in Italia e all'estero. Ha spesso collaborato con il teatro e la musica, dove si ricorda la collaborazione con la Georgian Sinfonietta Orchestra a Tbilisi nel 2017 e quella con la Silk Road Simphony Orchestra a Berlino. Ha tenuto diverse conferenze in musei e istituzioni in Europa e per Radio Rai 3 è stato ospite nei programmi Il terzo anello-Damasco e Le meraviglie. Nel 2010 ha fondato la rivista di arte e pensiero Rivista e nel 2013 ha pubblicato il suo primo libro Stella (Danilo Montanari Editore). Dal 2020 è nuovamente docente presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera dove insegna “Metodologie e tecniche del contemporaneo”. Vive e lavora a Berlino.

I fondi raccolti serviranno esclusivamente a coprire i costi di produzione del libro.

Life Screen is a book of Italian-language texts by artist Flavio de Marco selected over twenty years of reflections on art. The book originated as a compendium to the previous Screen Life and collects writings on artistic poetics in the form of working notes and free reflections, memoirs and aesthetic chronicles, short stories and essays for catalogs, magazine articles and film reviews. Developed in chronological order, the book starts from 1999, the year the artist began painting computer software operating system screens, and arrives at 2019, the year in which he returns to the representation of reality which he is also developing in the following years. 

"In a certain sense, the motivation of art - as Luciano Anceschi strongly argued already half a century ago - is the very meaning of the work of art, since only a full awareness of "doing" can justify the action by making it meaningful, that is, by giving it a raison d'être. The artist (the painter, but not only) writes because he thinks, because he reflects on his work, and therefore by writing he founds his artistic action, which - thanks to the thought that sustains it - can never be reduced to mere craft or to a particular practical mode of economic survival, but will precisely become thought in work" (from the Epilogue by Sandro Sproccati)   

The volume winds through writings of a heterogeneous nature, not only theoretical. The screen understood as the new landscape of the contemporary, the horizon as the loss of physical perspective in digital society, and the concept of mimesis as the loss of analog thought through the numerical copy of reality, are the poetic reflections with which the book opens. Interwoven with these are others on the art system and the role of the artist through direct experiences, at Documenta in Kassel or the Venice Biennale, in which an era of invisibility and unreality generated by the performative value of the public is described. The Ferrarese School, Titian, Vermeer, Courbet, Seurat, Malevich, Braque, Morandi, De Chirico, Burri, Rothko, Hamilton, Richter, but also closer colleagues, Pancrazzi, Consiglio, Bertolo, Samorì, as well as directors such as Lynch, Sorrentino, Van Sant and philosophers such as Ferrari, are other authors investigated in the book.

"It could be said that precisely Life Screen demonstrates that de Marco's eclecticism is what makes his work as a painter entirely related to an existential dimension of lived experience: in the recomposition of the shattered and in the recovery of a fullness of relationship with life - interests, passions, enthusiasms, deep emotions - that is extreme resistance in the face of the fact that life is continually being pushed away by the logics and mechanisms of dominant social communication. And this is also the way in which Life Screen reaffirms Screen Life, that is, that same gesture of radical opposition that painting can choose to put in place when, in fact, poses itself as an instrument of critique of mass alienation and as a recovery of an authentically human condition of artistic action" (from the Epilogue by Sandro Sproccati).  

THE BOOK

Life Screen will be produced in stitched paperback, in 15 x 21, cm format, with a total of 528 pages printed on Pergraphica 90 gr. hand-used paper.  It is scheduled to go to press in July 2022.  

THE ARTIST

Flavio de Marco was born in Lecce in 1975. He studied at Liceo Classico and then at Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. Since the late 90s, his work has been exhibited in various galleries and museums in Italy and abroad. He has often made artistic incursions into the fields of theater and music, collaborating, for example, with the Georgian Sinfonietta Orchestra in Tbilisi in 2017 and with the Silk Road Simphony Orchestra in Berlin. He has given several talks in museums and art institutions in Europe. He has been invited by the Italian national Radio Rai 3 to be a guest in the programs Il terzo anello - Damasco and Le meraviglie. In 2010 he founded the magazine Rivista and in 2013 he published his first book Stella (Danilo Montanari Editore). Since 2020 he has been teaching again "Methods and techniques of the contemporary" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. He lives and works in Berlin.

The funds raised will be used exclusively to cover the costs of producing the book.
