JANCU

Un cortometraggio sulla terra, sulla memoria e sulla resistenza.

In una campagna siciliana avvelenata dall’abbandono e dall’inquinamento, Lucio è l’ultimo custode del terreno di famiglia. Rimasto solo, continua a difendere un antico ulivo, ultimo legame con i suoi genitori e con una terra che rischia di scomparire sotto l’avanzata di una discarica. Quando ogni possibilità sembra svanire, compie un gesto estremo pur di salvare ciò che resta della sua memoria.

JANCU è un cortometraggio di finzione che racconta il rapporto viscerale tra essere umano e natura, tra appartenenza e perdita. 

Il film nasce da un sogno ricorrente: un ragazzo nudo che prende a pugni la terra. Da questa immagine prende forma la storia di Lucio, un uomo che sogna di vedere nascere un fiore di campo sul grembo di una terra nera. È proprio nella terra nera che spicca il bianco (jancu in siciliano) emerge in tutta la sua purezza, identità, assenza, lutto e rinascita.

JANCU vuole essere un rito laico e ruvido sulla terra, sul corpo e sulla resistenza. Un film che racconta chi resta, cosa si cancella e cosa si conserva.

Lucio è un eroe contadino e visionario che distrugge per purificare, consapevole che potrebbe bruciare insieme a tutto il resto. Il suo legame con la terra è ancestrale e simbolico, prima ancora che narrativo.

Come scrive l’autrice: «Lucio, a differenza mia, ha scelto di rimanere, di resistere ogni giorno per proteggere quella terra nera fino a rimanere isolato. Da siciliana provo dolore per la mia terra, abusata di continuo, ma sono la prima a sentirmi accusata da lui per essere andata via e averlo lasciato solo a combattere una guerra comune.»

A short film about land, memory, and resistance.

In the poisoned countryside of rural Sicily, Lucio is the last guardian of his family’s land. Left alone, he continues to protect an ancient olive tree - the last remaining bond with his parents and with a homeland slowly being swallowed by a toxic landfill. As hope begins to fade, he commits an irreversible act to save what remains of his memory.

JANCU is a narrative short film that explores the visceral relationship between humanity and nature, between belonging and loss.

The film was born from a recurring dream: a naked young man punching the earth. From that haunting image emerged the story of Lucio, a man who dreams of seeing a wildflower bloom from the womb of black soil. Against that dark ground, jancu - the Sicilian word for white - stands out as a symbol of purity, identity, absence, mourning, and rebirth.

JANCU is conceived as a raw, secular ritual about the land, the body, and the act of resistance. It is a film about those who stay, what is erased, and what endures.

Lucio is both a farmer and a visionary. He destroys in order to purify, fully aware that he may burn along with everything else. His connection to the land is ancestral and symbolic before it is narrative.

As the director writes: “Unlike me, Lucio chose to stay. He chose to resist every single day, protecting that black earth until isolation became his only companion. As a Sicilian, I carry the pain of watching my homeland continuously violated. Yet I also feel accused by Lucio, because I was the one who left, leaving him alone to fight a battle that belongs to all of us.”
