Genesis Day: A History
Ever since Italy sanctioned, before all other countries, the success of Genesis in the early 70s, our country and the band have been bound together in an unbreakable tie of affection. This bond lives to this day in the enthusiasm of the fans, who gather every year to see tribute bands performing all across the country. Each band has its regulars and these often get together through Facebook groups, where they keep in touch and cultivate their shared passion. It was through social media that the idea first took shape to organize a big gathering in central Italy – sort of halfway to everybody – and arrange for Italian tribute bands to perform.
The resulting event took place in the lovely village of Bevagna, in the region of Umbria, on the 19th September 2015 and was given the name of Genesis Day. The event saw the performances of Francesco Gazzara (author of reworkings of Genesis’ music for piano solo), Real Dream, Dusk eB@nd, Anyway and special guest Bernardo Lanzetti (former singer of “Premiata Forneria Marconi”).
The first Genesis Day was such a success that it was repeated the following year, on 1st-2nd July, in Assisi (again in Umbria), with the performances of Van Wagner, Dancing Knight, Supper’s Ready, D.I.Y. Peter Grabriel Tribute Band, and special guests Armando Gallo (Genesis’ first officially appointed photographer) and Richard Macphail (former Road Manager of Genesis, often considered as a sixth member of the band).
In 2017, thanks to a collaboration with ”Proloco” of Nocera Umbra (an association promoting local culture and tourism), Genesis Day became a three-day event of full immersion in the Genesis experience, with the participation of GGP – Genesis Guitar Project (a project of reworking of Genesis’ music for an acoustic quartet of guitars and voice), Mad Men Moon (from Naples), Get’ Em Out (from Milan), and Estro (from Rome). The attendance to all performances was free.
Nocera Umbra: Where & Why
Nocera Umbra is a town in the heart of Umbria, known as the "city of waters", famous for its "campanaccio" (bell tower), symbol and pride of the town, and for the numerous springs with considerable healing properties, well known since ancient Rome. Up to 1997 this town had developed an excellent economic system, in both the tourism and the iron and steel industry, with factories which employ more than 5,000 people. It is also the home of many typical products of this region, such as black truffles, craft beers like "San Biagio" and "Le Canapaie", based on hemp. Beer's main ingredient, let us not forget, is water, which Nocera has in abundance and of very high quality. In addition, Nocera produces flours, pasta and oil and other hemp-based products. You can also find farms centred on the production of Chianina (a famous top-quality beef) and pig farms with annexed pork-butcher's.
Nocera Umbra also used to be able to count on a good amount of tourism in the Summer, being one of the favourite destinations of tourists coming from Rome and elsewhere, who would escape the Summer heat of big cities and find comfort in nature and the clean air of Nocera’s hills.
Unfortunately, the terrible earthquake of 1997 severely affected the whole economy of this geographical area, causing many factories to shut down, including the induced sectors connected to them. It took 20 years to rebuild the houses and the other buildings, but the gash created by the earthquake is still an open wound which the whole community is still struggling to heal, given the difficult period that the whole country is experiencing. Although today Nocera is completely rebuilt and its former glory restored, it is more evident than ever how important it is to restart the town's economy. One way is to organize Summer events, stimulate tourism and return to enjoying all the excellence that this small community may offer.
Purposes of the event
The Genesis Day event has the ambition to serve as an engine to help sustain and enhance the aspirations and goals of Nocera Umbra and its inhabitants. The ideas of upholding and giving value to the territory, to food and wine, and to advertise its history and art (through the promotion of the music of Genesis and the contribution of all who love it), gave a new impetus to the GDAY2018. The meeting of Genesis fans with "Proloco Nocera Umbra" arouse the ambition to go further and challenge the limits of what, until now, was the artistic palimpsest.
This year the schedule of GDAY 2018 features, on the 22th July, Mr. Ray Wilson, the Genesis band’s last singer, who will be accompanied by "Notturno Concertante". This will be Mr. Wilson’s only Italian date in his 2018 European tour and we thank him very much for accepting the invitation and embracing the idea and the spirit that generated it.
Moreover, in conformity to the international angle of this year's event, Jazznesis (Jaume Vilaseca Quartet featuring Mara Vilaseca as the leading voice) will join in from Barcelona, Carpet Crawlers from Liverpool and Gabriel Knights from Rome. And that is not all: on the last day of the Gday we will meet Richard MacPhail, who will present his latest book about Genesis.
There will be agreements with tourist facilities for accommodation, as well as organized trips to the town museums and tastings of local food and wine products: a THREE DAY event entirely dedicated to the music of GENESIS and to rediscovering Umbrian culture and cuisine.
Last but not least, we will stand by our tradition of donating part of the proceeds to the AISM (Italian Association for Multiple Sclerosis) of Foligno.
Concludendo:
Conclusions
Joining Genesis Day means to indulge in a weekend of the best music, good food and relaxation in the heart of Umbria, all while helping and actively promoting the whole social and touristic fabric of the territory.
Please note that the gigs are open and totally free.
How can you miss such an opportunity?
