OBIETTIVI DEL PROGETTO

IL PROGETTO

Il progetto dell'ospedale è stato concepito in modo da costruire un PRIMO MODULO in grado di fornire assistenza sanitaria a 360°: visite ambulatoriali, generali e specialistiche, esami strumentali (ECG, ecografie, Doppler), piccola chirurgia e sala parto. A questo primo modulo verranno accorpati in un secondo tempo più moduli che consentiranno di creare una piccola "città ospedaliera". Le seconda fase prevede la realizzazione di un secondo modulo di II livello per complessità ed intensità di cura. La terza fase invece sarà volta a realizzare un terzo modulo che ospiterà il Centro di Cardiochirurgia pediatrica che dovrà rispondere alle esigenze di una vasta area dell'Africa Centro-Occidentale.

Ad oggi l'obiettivo primario rimane la realizzazione del primo modulo entro gli inizi del 2018.

Struttura principale di 300 m2 circa così suddivisa:

- accettazione

- laboratorio analisi

- infermeria

- reparto ricoverati con circa 7 letti di cui 2 per day hospital. 

2. ACQUISTO E MESSA IN POSA DEI SERVIZI:     Euro 75.000,00

Note informative sul Togo

Il Togo ha una popolazione di 7 milioni di abitanti, di cui piú del 50% ha meno di 20 anni e solo il 3% ha più di 65 anni. La vita media è di 59 anni (55 per gli uomini e 60 per le donne).

Nel Paese vige un sistema sanitario privatistico che consente l’accesso alle cure mediche solo a chi ha le capacità economiche di sostenere i costi, privando così i meno abbienti del diritto alle cure quale diritto fondamentale della persona, senza alcuna eccezione per i bambini.

Popolazione totale (2015): 7.305.000 

La situazione attuale in materia medica in Togo è la seguente (dall’Annuario delle statistiche sanitarie del 1996):

3.855 abitanti/infermiera o ostetrica

- L'assistenza sanitaria è totalmente a carico dei pazienti che non hanno risorse per potersela permettere.
–  I mezzi finanziari dei genitori sono molto modesti, la maggior parte dei bambini non arriva in ospedale, perché muoiono prima che la famiglia abbia trovato i soldi necessari per il viaggio.
–  Gli strumenti per una valutazione clinica sono limitati: solo l’ospedale centrale ha un ecografo, mentre negli ospedali regionali la diagnosi manca di screening strumentale (quindi la diagnosi è basata principalmente sull’osservazione clinica). A volte i bambini devono percorrere circa 600 km per ottenere una diagnosi e un trattamento appropriato, in particolare quelli affetti da malattie cardiache.

–  L’angiografia non può essere fatta in Togo a causa della mancanza di attrezzature.

–  La TAC può essere fatta a pagamento solo nella Capitale Lomé. 

WHO WE ARE

THE PRECIOUS HANDS (TPH) Non Profit Organization

The Organization TPH was founded in 2002 in Italy where a group of volunteers together with Dr. Edem Koffi, a Togolese doctor working in Italy, started a process of international cooperation through health care, health and hygiene education, professional medical training and food support to the population of Togo.

The first results of the presence of The Precious Hands in Togo are measurable in 127 patients seen during July 2003 and an average of 100 patients seen per month with the creation of a permanent medical clinic named "Angelica" in the village of Togblekope, where the team of TPH carried out 200 simple births, 20,000 consultations, 40,000 vaccinations up to January 2013.

The Precious Hands has consolidated its presence in Togo through many missions in various villages of the Country, especially in areas where the doctor/inhabitant ratio is quite low. In addition to the medical missions in recent years, the Organization TPH has purchased on behalf of our Sister Organization in Togo named Les Mains Precieuses a piece of land in the village that was later reclaimed; TPH also built a well that provides water supply to the local population. Also, since 2007 the Organization TPH  initiated a social project in support of children of 2 orphanages located in the remote and disadvantaged regions of the Country, by providing financial support for schooling and for the support of children.

TPH Total membership: 20 Ordinary Members, 80 friend-members and many external supporters.

Organization funding sources: Members contributions, private donations, fundraisers organized by TPH as dinners, exhibitions, fairs. In addition to these, other Nonprofit Organizations supported us with several  fundraisers.

GOALS

The experience and knowledge gained over the years on the Togolese territory and according to the needs of local people we realized that in order to ensure continuity and quality to the treatment, the stable presence of a medical center whilst also providing training and employing medical and paramedical local personnel.

On December 15, 2016 The Precious Hands started the construction of the first Unit of a Hospital  in the village of Todome, on the crop field of the Organization TPH, about 40 km from the capital Lome. The hospital has the following goals: 

- Reduce child mortality

- Guarantee at least the possibility of simple births

- Provide all treatment against malaria, toxic infections and different kinds of parasitosis.

- Providing health care to the local population and to the neighboring villages.

THE PROJECT

The hospital project was designed in order to build a FIRST UNIT that could provide general health care: outpatient visits, general and specialist visits, instrumental examinations (ECG, ultrasound, Doppler), minor surgery and delivery room. This FIRST UNIT will be merged at a later time with other units resulting in a multidisciplinary hospital.  The second phase involves the construction of a second Unit of second level for the complexity and the intensity of care. The third phase will create a third Unit that will host a Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Center that will meet the needs of a vast area of the regions of Central Western Africa.

As of today our primary goal is the realization of the FIRST UNIT within the beginning of 2018.

The hospital project was carried out pro bono for The Precious Hands by the architectural firm  Luzzi of Florence.

The funds raised so far by The Precious Hands allowed to start the construction work, but we need your help to carry out the construction of the FIRST UNIT until completion.

The progress of the building work is followed on site by Mr. Leonidas Kpegba, president of our sister Non-profit Org.  Les Mains Precieuses based in Lome, Togo.

The health center will become a reference point for the populations of the neighboring countries as Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali for a total of about 43 million inhabitants.

TPH appointed a Togolese building company to carry out the building work, thus remaining in line with the Organization TPH's motto: "Strive not to become indispensable."

HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE APPLIED

1. CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST PART OF THE HOSPITAL: approximately Euro 100,000.00

300 sq. mts. main building approximately divided as follows:

- Reception

- Laboratory analysis

- Pharmacy

- Delivery room

- Ultrasound room

- Visits room

- Infirmary

- Inpatient ward with about 7 beds including 2 for day hospital.

2. PURCHASE AND SET UP OF FACILITIES: Euro 75.000,00

- 2.1 PV SYSTEM

- 2.2 DRINKING WATER SYSTEM

- 2.3 SPECIAL WASTE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

3. CONSTRUCTION OF A SECOND WELL: Euro 10,000.00.

PURCHASE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND FURNITURE: Euro 50.000,00 (Ultrasound, ECG, EMG, equipment for Hemogasanalysis).

ABOUT TOGO

Togo has a population of 7 million inhabitants, of which more than 50% are under 20 years old and only 3% over 65 years old. The average life expectancy is 59 years (55 for men and 60 for women).

The Country applies a privatized health system that provides access to medical care only to those who have the economic capacity to bear the costs, thus depriving the poor of the right to health care as a fundamental right of the person, without any exception for children.

Currently medical care in Togo can be described as follows (from the Yearbook of health statistics of 1996):

- Health care is totally borne by patients who do not have enough resources to afford it.

- The financial resources of the parents are very modest, most of the children cannot go to the hospital, because they die before the family has found the money needed for the journey.

- Tools for clinical diagnosis are limited: only the central hospital has an ultrasound scanner, while in regional hospitals diagnosis lacks instrumental screening (so the diagnosis is mainly based on observation). Sometimes children have to travel 600 km to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment, especially those suffering from heart disease.

- Angiography is not available in Togo due to the lack of equipment.

- CAT Scan is available only at the private hospital in the capital of Lome.
