English version

Bernd “Barnelli” Witthüser

"I still want to sing this song"

I had the privilege of being close to Bernd, knowing that I had met an extraordinary person. Barnelli was unique, with uncommon strength & energy. He was completely consumed by music, his true love, to which he dedicated his life.

Traveling with him by motorcycle to Germany, I had the occasion to discover his past fame. A success story that has left a mark on the German music scene.

After his passing on August 4th, 2017, I had the chance to meet up again with his old friends in Germany. Amongst them some of the first authentic hippies, that still conserve the same rebel energy from the protests of 1968. Youth occupied in civil and social battles who, together with Bernd, were some of the protagonists of the German music scene. His friends, who after many years, still keep the memory, the emotions and the pleasure of these times, gave me the idea to realize this documentary.

In Germany, where Bernd took his first artistic steps, they welcomed this project with enthusiasm. In Maremma and other places in Italy, where he lived for 40 years, many wanted to leave their memories as well. Sixteen testimonies collected, are the first results of this auto produced project. The same way Barnelli would have done it himself.

The Objective is to get to know the other Bernd or Barnelli. A man full of surprises. In both countries he called home, people know next to nothing about his other musical sides. But both sides of the Witthüser / Bärnelli coin are full of surprises.

To the Italian public (of which many the older crowd still remember him well) I want to show the young Bernd Witthüser, who animated the cultural life of his city Essen and his region, the Ruhrgebiet, zone of mining, Italian immigrants and heavy factories. The protest singer, the administrative director of the first big German Rock and Folk Festival “Internationale Essener Songtage”, as a musical director of the Music Pub Podium and most importantly as a co-founder of the successful psychedelic Folk Duo Witthüser & Westrupp. Often called Krautrock, their acoustic sounding music with its German lyrics and unique instrumentation, created a genre that was and is difficult to categorise. In an interview Witthüser once ironically labeled it as “Cosmic Krautfolk”.

To his early fans in mostly German speaking countries, it will be of interest how this almost Popstar like figure, at the apex of his success in 1973, left it all and went to India. Only to come back with the decision to become a professional street musician. Just like a famous W&W song tells it: “Lass uns auf die Reise geh’n, anderes Land zu suchen.” - “Let us hit the road and look for new horizons”

The beginning of another story where, once again, success characterizes his every move, as if it was routine.

First solo, as a One Man Band on stilts, but soon with his new musical partner on electric violin, the artistic union was perfect and complete. They formed the true and unique One Man Band duo “Otto & Barnelli”.

After an immediate success in the streets of Germany and neighboring countries, they soon moved to Italy where their wild show, played at truly ground shaking volume, soon made them famous in various Italian TV productions.

But once again: Getting bored with this kind of artificial fame, he eventually pulled the emergency brake.

The thrill of direct contact and freedom granted by choosing the road as a stage, is priceless and above all consonant to the lifestyle chosen, the famous motto of the beat generation: “On The Road”.

He closed definitively with show business and dedicated his life to playing in the street.

The idea of this documentary not only comes from my deep inner conviction that I owe this to Bernd, but also because I know how much he, together with his musical brethren, touched and entertained countless folks in over 50 years.

In just the right moment, through some strange alignment of the stars, (or maybe it was Herr Witthüser directing from the hereafter) fate has let me cross my path with Gerard “GeeGee” Kettel, a friend and college of Bernd. For many years himself a One Man Band, he not only has been a long standing fan of Witthüser & Westrupp, but also was “converted” after seeing Otto & Barnelli perform in the streets in Germany in the late 70s. He saw the light and is earning his bread as a street musician ever since.

Like no one else, he seems to be predestined to give this project another push. Because of his experience as a busker, as well as his knowledge of both the international and German music scene, but most of all because of his readiness to invest time and energy into this project, I once again feel wind under my wings to complete this documentary.

The first steps of this project were my own initiative, as was the first funding. To complete the shooting, editing, do the translations and cover the rest of the costs, I need your help.

Following this, you'll find a detailed budget and the steps we have to take in these following nine months, needed to collect the funds required to complete the work in progress, which is already sparking great interest.

You can follow things up on our Facebook site which we dedicated to the making of this film:

Barnelli, un uomo libero. Il documentario (Barnelli, a free man. The documentary)

We still need to visit Otto Richter, his legendary companion for 27 years in Italy and Walter Westrupp, his partner from '68 -'73 in Germany. Two artists fundamental in Bernd's career who probably have some interesting tales to tell. And there are other important figures in the life of Bernd, both in Italy and Germany, who for sure have something to offer.

Why are we doing this?

Not least of all, because we also share Bernd’s great passion to work in the street. Like him and many others, I also chose the street as my stage and well know the “blood, sweat & tears” that can come with it. But I also know the pure joy of performing and the unbeatable rush one gets out of creating something magical and unique at the spur of a moment. Today, more than ever, it is necessary to reinitiate, that performing in the street is for many artists a choice of life and not a fallback like many of the public might believe.

This journey into his past helped me to consolidate what I already knew and bring back the man behind the artist. But above all, me and Gerard believe that the memory of this legendary and multi faceted artist should be honored and passed on to new generations.

We thank all those of you who will contribute with donations and help spread this long fundraising campaign.

Thank you all, from the heart.

Serena Galella

Gerard "Gee Gee" Kettel

How we’ll spend the money you will donate

To complete the documentary (duration 55 min) we need a total budget of € 35.000,00.

The costs that make up the budget are based on the expenses that the production will have to face both in the remaining production phase and in the post production phase.

The work already done, pre-production, consisting of filming in Italy and Germany, translations, the preparation of this crowdfunding campaign and the organization of the launch event, saw a group engaged for over a year.

Today, to finish the project, we need new interviews in Italy and in Germany and filming in and around Essen. We will also have to acquire the rights of the archival material of Bernd himself. We know that this is one of the most complex points.

The documentary will have two versions: One Italian and one German and this includes a team of translators. They will take care of the unpublished Italian interviews and those of the German archives, of the songs of Bernd and of translating any interviewees, who will be added with the new shots.

All the funds raised through this campaign will be used for the production of the documentary and in no way will there be a willingness to make money on this project; if we get to make the documentary, any future proceeds will be donated to create a fund to support street artists in difficulty. And like our street rebel and friendly provocateur would surly have approved of, I would call it “The Bordello Bärnelli fond”. (go to description).

Production and Distribution

After this first fundraising, we would like to look for a German co-production to allow a greater diffusion of the documentary in Germany. We will try to distribute it through our network of festivals and events related to the world of street artists in Italy and abroad.

The choice of Crowdfunding: The "hat"

Because we are street artists, donation is essential, and the "hat" is the means by which we collect spontaneous offers during or at the end of the show. It's the usual practice. We are artists and artisans, we like to build, create and improvise. And are used to realize and produce a project on our own. The same way Barnelli did it as well. For a collective of street artists it is more than natural to dedicate this tribute to an artist like Barnelli, who always chose the street and freedom over fame and success. We feel he deserves it.

We hope to be able to also fill this hat and reach our goal.
