ATLANTICO Festival is a music and cinema two-day’s journey across the cultural heritage of the African continent and its diasporas.
Its first edition will be held at TPO, in Bologna (Italy), on September 22nd and 23rd.
The festival takes its name from the Atlantic Ocean, which for centuries has witnessed the uprooting of millions of people, from Africa to the New World. Once the background to separation and violence, ATLANTICO becomes the crossroad where multiple experiences meet, and art, culture and sharing play a crucial role.
ATLANTICO will invite on stage bands and artists that build on and innovate specific musical traditions from Africa and its diasporas in America and the Caribbean. The Festival aims at becoming a springboard for artists that are less supported by mainstream circuits.
Alongside with concerts, the festival will host documentaries and fictional cinema, as well as talks with movie directors, cinema critics, academics and journalists.
ATLANTICO's main objective is to raise awareness and knowledge among a wide public.
Rethinking, through a cultural and artistic prism, the experiences of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism and their historical consequences, up to today's globalisation, is essential to understand the contradictions of our contemporary societies.
Last, but not least, ATLANTICO aims at encouraging a reflection on how African and Afro-descendant subjectivities are represented in the “Western” societies and in the globalised world.
