The International School of Trieste's Project Calcutta 2.0 is a student-led initiative which offers the chance to a selected group of High School students to go to Calcutta, India in order to participate in hands-on volunteer work.
This project has developed from an existing relationship between IST and the non-profit organization Institute for Indian Mother and Child since 1998 when IST received a letter from the Trieste Association of Medical students who were asking schools in Trieste to get involved.
The Institute for Indian Mother & Child (IIMC) is a non-governmental voluntary organization, committed to promoting child & maternal health, literacy and empowerment. The IIMC was initiated by Dr. Sujit Kumar Brahmochary and was set up in 1989, with its mission being that of answering the medical needs of the poorest people of West Bengal, India. Today, the IIMC has expanded its activities to include Medical, Health Education & Health Promotion, Education & Sponsorship Programs, and integrated rural development projects including women’s economic empowerment through a Micro-finance Banking and agricultural program.
I am an IST student who has been selected to take part in this project. We will be helping out at the IIMC by working in the clinics, teaching children english, making baby food and, having witnessed all the above-mentioned programs, being ambassadors for the NGO when we come back. In order to have an actual positive impact we are looking for further sources of funds. We would be thrilled to get all the help we can to finance this project and this association.
