GRATTA LA CROSTA

I Krosmos ritornano. In vista del 10imo anniversario del loro unico e leggendario album, pubblicato nel 2001, il gruppo milanese con influenze jazz, balcaniche e mediterranee, ha in cantiere un nuovo lavoro. I musicisti, nel frattempo persi in varie esperienze all'estero, si sono ridati appuntamento per l'autunno 2010 a Milano per preparare un nuovo progetto.
Il primo album, “2001: ODISSEE INFRANTE ALLE PERIFERIE DELL'IMPERO”, quasi 10 anni fa, era ricco di influenze della musica “limitrofa”, giunta in Italia attraverso l'esodo dei musicisti che lasciavano la propria terra per cercare un nuovo futuro qui in Italia, dai Balcani, dal Medio Oriente, dal Nord Africa. Questa volta sono gli stessi musicisti del gruppo che, dopo anni di fuga all'estero, ognuno verso latitudini diverse, riportano a casa le influenze raccolte “on the road”, dal Nord Europa alla Turchia.
Ed è un ritorno a casa denso di significati. E' un ritrovarsi per scambiarsi le esperienze raccolte in posti altri per cercare di capire cosa l'Italia è diventata nel frattempo.
Il 2001 era stato l'Anno Terribile, il G8 di Genova, le Torri Gemelle, eventi storici che avevano profondamente segnato l'album. Il Decennio Terribile, con l'occupazione di Afghanistan e Iraq, 8 anni di devastante berlusconismo, volge ora al termine.
Tornare significa quindi capire, scavare, andare alla ricerca di cosa significa, anche musicalmente, essere oggi Italiani. Significa, in altre parole, “grattare la crosta”. Significa riscoprire i colori rimasti coperti dalle incrostazioni del tempo e dell'inganno.
Il 2011 sarà anche il 150esimo anniversario della creazione dello Stato Italiano, un episodio mistificato di Storia comune, fatto di soprusi di alcuni Italiani ai danni di altri Italiani, che in un momento di ridiscussione dell'identità nazionale ogni cittadino dovrebbe avvertire come degno di riconsiderazione. Noi, da musicisti e parolieri, ci siamo proposti di farlo, affondando le mani nei dialetti e nella musica locale italiana per ricavarne, con il nostro stile, materiale per il prossimo lavoro.
Lavoro che ha come titolo provvisorio, appunto, “Gratta la crosta” e sarà un “concept album”, dove ogni brano racconterà attraverso una storia reale o immaginaria un personaggio reale o immaginario d'Italia, per raccontare un Paese come a noi piace o piacerebbe attraverso episodi oscuri o dimenticati di Storia italiana che vorremmo rievocare. Al momento stiamo lavorando a un brano che racconti il G8 di Genova, le emozioni e le ferite che in ognuno di noi, allora presenti, ha lasciato. Ma c'è attualmente in cantiere anche un brano sulla strage di Ustica, uno sulla resistenza di Civitella del Tronto alle truppe sabaude, uno dedicato a Pier Paolo Pasolini, un altro a Tina Modotti, a Dario Bellezza, a Gina Galeotti Bianchi, a Mario Rigoni Stern, a Nino Rota.
A rendere speciale questo lavoro sarà la cornice dove verrà registrato l'album, ossia Istanbul, città dove risiede attualmente Michelangelo, uno dei componenti. Così in terra straniera, sarà un modo per ripensare all'Italia con nostalgia e con rinnovato amore, come antichi cospiratori in esilio armati solo di strumenti musicali e tanto spirito critico. Ma sarà anche l'occasione per ospitare all'interno dell'album straordinari musicisti incontrati sulle sponde del Bosforo e per ridare forza alla vocazione orientale e mediterranea del nostro Paese.
Istanbul è anche lo scenario dove Michelangelo, al contempo musicista e regista, ha da poco ultimato le riprese del film “Quando le mule partoriranno”. Pertanto, per il lancio dell'album, previsto per la primavera 2011, si sta già pensando infatti a un video-clip speciale sul G8 di Genova del 2001 con immagini inedite girate all'epoca da Michelangelo e altre immagini d'archivio.

The Krosmos are back. A little before the 10th anniversary of their legendary first and unique album, released in 2001, the Milanese group with jazz, Balkan and Mediterranean influences, is working on a new job. The musicians, meanwhile lost making several experiences abroad, will join back in the autumn 2010 in Milan to prepare a new project.
The first album, “2001: CRUSHED ODYSSEYS IN THE PERYPHERIES OF THE EMPIRE” almost 10 years ago, was influenced by the "surrounding" music, arrived in Italy through the exodus of musicians who left their homeland to seek a new future here in Italy, from the Balkans, the Middle East, North Africa. This time the same group of musicians, after years of escape abroad, each to different latitudes, back home gathered new influences found on the road from Northern Europe to Turkey.
And it is a homecoming fraught with meaning. It 's a meeting to exchange the experiences met in other places to find out what Italy is now become.
The year 2001 was the “Terrible Year”, the G8 summit in Genoa, the Twin Towers, historical events that have profoundly marked that album. The “Terrible Decade”, the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, the devastating 8 years of Berlusconi at power, is now coming to an end.
Again then it means to understand, to dig. We will try to look for what it means, even musically, be Italians today. It means, in other words, “to scatch the crust”. It means rediscovering the colors remained covered by scales of time and deceit.
The 2011 will also be the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Italian State, an episode of common History mystified, with abuses of some Italians against other Italians, that in a moment of redefinition of national identity every citizen should feel as worthy of reconsideration. We, as musicians and songwriters, we set out to do it, sinking our hands into dialects and Italian local music in order to obtain, with our style, material for the next work.
In fact, the work is temporarily named “Gratta la crosta” (=Scratch the crust) and will be a concept album where each song tells through a real or imagined story a real or imaginary character of Italy, to tell a country how we like or we would like to be, through episodes obscure or forgotten of Italian History that we want to recall. We are currently working on a song that tells the G8 summit in Genoa, the emotions and the wounds that left in each of us, then present. But there is currently in progress also a song on the massacre of Ustica, one on the resistance of Civitella del Tronto to the Savoy troops, one dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini, another to Tina Modotti, Dario Bellezza, Gina Galeotti Bianchi, Mario Rigoni Stern, Nino Rota.
What makes this work special is the place where the album will be recorded, that is Istanbul, a city where currently lives Michelangelo, one of the components. So in a strange land, it will be a way to rethink Italy with renewed love and longing, like ancient exiled conspirators armed only with musical instruments and so much critical spirit. But it will also be an opportunity to host within the album extraordinary musicians met on the shores of the Bosphorus and to restore strength to the Eastern and Mediterranean vocation of our country.
Istanbul is also the scenario where Michelangelo, musician and filmmaker, has just completed filming his new movie “When the mules will give birth”. Therefore, for the album launch, scheduled for spring 2011, we are already thinking about a special video-clip on the G8 in Genoa in 2001 with new images shot at the time by Michelangelo and other coming from video directories.
